Turning in assignments on time during college is somewhat beneficial. I think that it goes on a class by class basis for how important homework is. In some classes it is extremely important to do the homework because the homework is a hefty percentage of the final grade. In other classes the homework is optional so it doesn’t hurt your grade if you don’t do it. I think that in some classes it is beneficial to do the homework even if you don’t get credit for it. It is beneficial for you because then you will more than likely do better on the exams.
Overall though I think that you can judge whether or not you need to do homework on a class by class basis. I think that if you choose to do the homework for a class for whatever reason, then you should do that homework in a timely manner. It is important to do it in a timely manner so you get it out of the way and you get the full points for it from the professor.
Making sure that you do your homework on time will do wonders for the rest of your academic skills. It will help improve your time management skills by forcing you to schedule to get all of your work done. It will also improve your grades overall by boosting homework and exam scores. All in all there are some benefits to doing your homework me in a timely manner.

Mentor
Finding faculty that I get along with and that can be my mentor is something that I try to do. In high school I found a couple of teachers that I could really connect with. These teachers wrote me glowing letters of recommendations for various things when I graduated.
In college so far I haven’t really had a chance to connect with any of the professors. This is partly to the fact that all of my classes are in giant lecture halls where I am one of between two and four hundred students. The Hixson lecture is actually my second smallest class by far. I know that as I progress further into my college career the classes will shrink a little bit and this will make finding a mentor easier.
Another reason that I haven’t had a chance to connect with any professors that are in my career path is that I haven’t entered into an official major yet. Since I haven’t chosen a major I haven’t had any classes with professors that are in the field that I will go in to. I know that when I enter in to a major then I will find a professor that I can connect with.
I look for a few things in a mentor. The most important thing that I look for is somebody that I can easily talk to and connect with. This is important to me because I need to be able to see myself wanting to be like that person in my future career. It is also important for this person to be in a position to give me a letter of recommendation that carries some weight in his and my field of study. I know that I will find a person that can be a mentor to me in my four years at Iowa State.

Broomball
When I went to club fest I didn’t look into very many clubs. Instead I decided to join an intramural team. I joined a broomball team with my roommate and some other guys from my floor.
For those of you that don’t know what broomball is, I will give you a brief overview of what the game involves. Broomball is played like ice hockey except you don’t have ice skates or a hockey stick. You play broomball by running around on the ice in tennis shoes. You push a ball about the size of a mini soccer ball around with a “broom” and try to score in your opponents net. Broomball is also played really late at night, but that is half the fun of it.
I joined this team so I could have some fun and hang out with some of the guys on my floor. I hope that by doing this I will gain more friends and have some of the most fun that I will have this year. I think that broomball will help me in the future by preparing me for sleepless nights later on in college when I am studying for tests.
Broomball I think is the best game to play at ISU. You don’t have to be good to have a good time because half of the fun is watching everybody fall down.

I am not a very good speaker. This is a well known fact at my high school. You could even ask my freshman speech teacher, and he would tell you that I have could content but my delivery is terrible. It is for this fact that I felt at my best when I gave a speech at my graduation ceremony in May of this year. I could have chosen an academic or athletic accomplishment as a time that I felt like my best, but when I gave that speech I felt like a million bucks.
Leading up to my speech I was a nervous wreck. The fact that the gymnasium that the ceremony was being held in was extremely hot didn’t really help matters either. Some people would be appalled by the amount of preparation that I put into my speech. On the other hand though, I think that some people were just amazed that I managed to write out my speech ahead of time. Like I said I am a terrible public speaker, but I am also a huge procrastinator. So when I got up on that stage all I had was my written out speech and a couple of hundred people in front of me. I walked up to the podium and I realized that I forgot to practice my speech beforehand. This thought made me even more nervous. The time had now come though.
When I started speaking everything just started to come out. I felt on top of the world, I was thinking I know the people I am talking about, this is easy. In the end, I was told that I gave one of the best speeches at the ceremony. I felt like I was on top of the world. I think that I can translate this into my college transition by telling myself that even if I don’t want to do something I can still succeed and have fun doing it. I will use this experience to make myself try new things even if they are outside of my comfort zone.
Giving this big speech was one of the highlights of my senior year of high school. I think that it represents me a lot by showing how much that I progressed as a person throughout my high school years. I hope that I will keep this speech in mind throughout my college career and beyond so I can be a better person for it. I hope that everyone can at sometime feel as good as I felt after I finished giving that speech.
