Mentor

Finding faculty that I get along with and that can be my mentor is something that I try to do. In high school I found a couple of teachers that I could really connect with. These teachers wrote me glowing letters of recommendations for various things when I graduated.

In college so far I haven’t really had a chance to connect with any of the professors. This is partly to the fact that all of my classes are in giant lecture halls where I am one of between two and four hundred students. The Hixson lecture is actually my second smallest class by far. I know that as I progress further into my college career the classes will shrink a little bit and this will make finding a mentor easier.

Another reason that I haven’t had a chance to connect with any professors that are in my career path is that I haven’t entered into an official major yet. Since I haven’t chosen a major I haven’t had any classes with professors that are in the field that I will go in to. I know that when I enter in to a major then I will find a professor that I can connect with.

I look for a few things in a mentor. The most important thing that I look for is somebody that I can easily talk to and connect with. This is important to me because I need to be able to see myself wanting to be like that person in my future career. It is also important for this person to be in a position to give me a letter of recommendation that carries some weight in his and my field of study. I know that I will find a person that can be a mentor to me in my four years at Iowa State.

  1. It is good that you are able to realize that once you get an official major that you will have people who will be able to help you throughout the years.

  2. I agree about it being hard to connect with someone, especially in big lectures. Your mentor is out there, you two just have to find each other.

  5. That is great that you know what you want in a mentor. It is hard getting to know the professors when you are in a large lecture hall. If you have time at the end of class, go down an introduce yourself.

  8. I found that with bigger classes if you go to your teachers office hours, or ask a question after class the teachers love it. Even questions that i already know the answers to ill go up and ask the teacher and now he knows me by name.

  9. I agree that it's really hard to connect with a professor in huge lecture halls. Declaring a major will also help a lot too!

  10. Maybe you will have some smaller classes in the spring so you will have more of a chance to meet your professors. You might meet someone whom you can talk to even if they aren't in your future major.

  11. I'm the same way with huge classes like that. You'll find someone you'll want to talk to eventually!

  12. Stay a little bit after one of those huge lecture classes and ask the professor a question about the lecture. You could also go visit them during their office hours. Professor really like that because it shows initiative.

  13. Knowing the characteristics you are looking for in a mentor is important. And with time, hopefully you will be in smaller classes and develop closer relationships with people.
